Western Texas College will turn the area in front of the Scurry County Museum into a celebration of local history, creativity and West Texas traditions during Snyder Sparks at WTC: Celebrating Our Shared Roots and Traditions on Saturday, October 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The free, family-friendly event, sponsored by IPX Power, will invite visitors to explore the stories, skills and traditions that have shaped Snyder and Scurry County while discovering how those traditions continue to inspire new ideas.

“Snyder Sparks at WTC is really about celebrating what makes this community special,” said Lora Poe, WTC Foundation Director. “There is so much knowledge, creativity and history right here in Snyder, and this gives people a fun way to experience it together.”

Snyder Sparks at WTC is part of Snyder’s celebration of the Smithsonian Museum on Main Street traveling exhibition, “Spark! Places of Innovation.” The Oct. 17 event will bring families, students, neighbors and visitors together for a day designed around discovery, conversation and hands-on experiences.

Visitors can pick up an event passport and make their way through stations featuring a wide variety of activities and demonstrations. Experiences will include silversmithing, local art, wood branding, leatherworking, bread making, arrowheads, agriculture, STEM, oil drilling and production, rodeo traditions, local history, emergency services, international foods, chalk art and more.

Rather than simply looking at displays, visitors will have opportunities to see skills in action, ask questions and learn more about the traditions and industries that have helped shape life in West Texas.

“We want people to come curious,” Poe said. “Someone might stop to watch a demonstration they have never seen before, learn something about an industry that has been part of this area for generations or discover a new connection to Snyder’s history. There will be something different around every corner.”

Entertainment will add even more energy throughout the day, with performances by Danza Guadalupana, the Deep Creek Cloggers, Keegan Bufkin, CheerStars and DJ Alfred Leal. Food trucks will also be on site, and visitors will find photo opportunities throughout the event, a great way to capture memories.

Western Texas College will also celebrate its own place in the community by sharing pieces of College history and memories from generations of Westerners.

Following the outdoor celebration, Dr. Holle Humphries will present a program about Quanah Parker at 2 p.m. inside the Scurry County Museum.

“Snyder has always been a place where people know how to create, build, adapt and help one another,” Poe said. “Snyder Sparks gives us a chance to celebrate those roots while also looking at the ideas and creativity that will carry our community forward.”

Snyder Sparks at WTC is free and open to the public. The event will take place on the main walkway in front of the Scurry County Museum on the Western Texas College campus.
