Western Texas College and Snyder Independent School District remain committed to their longstanding partnership in support of students, families, and workforce development throughout the region.

Following conversations between college and district leadership regarding a recently announced School Bus Driver Training course, both organizations agreed that transportation-related training opportunities are best developed in close coordination with local school districts and community partners to ensure alignment with regional needs.

As a result of those discussions, Western Texas College has elected not to move forward with the previously announced training sessions at this time.

"Western Texas College values its relationship with Snyder ISD and appreciates the important role the district plays in serving students and families throughout our community," said Dr. Laurie Sharp, President of Western Texas College. "Our shared commitment is to strengthen opportunities for the people of this region through collaboration, communication, and service."

College leaders also recognize the dedication of Snyder ISD's Transportation Department and the essential work performed each day by transportation professionals who safely connect students with educational opportunities. District transportation staff play a critical role in supporting student success and maintaining reliable service for families across the district.

Recruiting and retaining qualified bus drivers remains a top priority for Snyder ISD. In December, the district was short three drivers, making transportation staffing one of its most pressing needs.

Under the leadership of Director of Operations Drew Fellows, Snyder ISD has streamlined the hiring, training, and certification process, removed barriers by covering the full cost of CDL training and certification, and increased driver pay to $31.50 per hour for both regular routes and special-event trips. As a result, nine drivers have since earned certification, two more are scheduled to test this week, and six additional candidates are enrolled in summer training. The district has also added substitute drivers to provide backup coverage and now maintains a waiting list of qualified applicants.

Mr. Fellows has also spearheaded several transportation safety and efficiency initiatives, including the implementation of the BusRight app for real-time route tracking and communication, a proactive plan to modernize the fleet with seatbelt-compliant buses, and improved fleet management practices.

"By coupling these new safety initiatives with fully funded training and competitive compensation, we are providing an elevated level of service and safety our community can

trust," said Dr. Jessica Gore. Anyone interested in becoming a bus driver is encouraged to contact the transportation office at 325-574-8950.

Western Texas College remains committed to providing workforce and continuing education opportunities that respond to community priorities and employer needs. The college looks forward to exploring future partnerships with Snyder ISD and other regional organizations to support workforce development initiatives that benefit West Texas communities.

"As we move forward, our focus remains on building strong partnerships and creating opportunities that serve students, employers, and communities across the region," Sharp said. "We are proud of our relationship with Snyder ISD and look forward to continued collaboration in the years ahead."
