PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Build skills for one of today’s fastest-growing technical fields. Western Texas College’s Data Center Technician program prepares students for entry-level work in data center operations by combining information technology training with facilities infrastructure skills.
Students learn how to install, configure, and maintain IT hardware, including servers, storage devices, and network equipment. The program also introduces students to the systems that keep data centers running, including electrical distribution, cooling systems, safety procedures, security practices, programmable logic controllers, and motor controls.

SAFETY, SECURITY, AND PROFESSIONALISM
Data centers require employees who understand safety, security, and reliability. Students learn OSHA and industry safety standards, including personal protective equipment, hazard recognition, lockout/tagout procedures, and appropriate responses to electrical and mechanical emergencies.
The program also emphasizes physical access controls, secure data handling, basic cybersecurity practices, communication, ethics, reliability, and following workplace policies and procedures.
HANDS-ON TRAINING
Students gain practical experience with the technology and systems used in data center environments. Training includes network cabling, Linux installation and basic administration, PC hardware diagnostics and repair, information technology security, basic electrical theory, motor controls, programmable logic controllers, mechanical drives, fiber optic systems, refrigeration principles, and workforce preparation.
CERTIFICATE AND TRAINING OPTIONS OFFERED
Students may choose from the following pathways:
Integrated Data Center Operations Technician Level 1 Certificate (36 semester credit hours)
Data Center Foundations Occupational Skills Award (12 semester hours – courses stack towards the Certificate)
The Data Center Foundations Occupational Skills Award (12 semester hours) stacks directly into the Level 1 Certificate, giving students a pathway to continue building skills and credentials.
