Presidents' Update
August 2026

Dr. Laurie Sharp with Police Officer Silva
As we prepare to welcome students for the 2026-2027 academic year, I want to thank our faculty, staff, and community partners for the dedication and hard work that made this summer such a productive season. From strengthening partnerships and pursuing new funding opportunities to enhancing student support and refining institutional processes, the work accomplished over the past several months has positioned Western Texas College for a successful year ahead.
One of our most significant milestones this summer was the Board of Trustees’ approval of our new strategic plan, Serving Students Together: A 10-Year Strategy for Western Texas College (2026–2036). This plan provides a shared vision for the future of WTC and reflects the voices of our students, employees, trustees, and community partners. Over the coming months, we will focus on building awareness of the strategic plan across the College and throughout our service area while beginning the important work of implementing its priorities. I look forward to partnering with all of you as we turn this vision into meaningful action.
This summer, we also continued to pursue opportunities that strengthen educational access and workforce development throughout West Texas. WTC submitted several major grant proposals focused on workforce pathways, artificial intelligence, career and technical education, and rural student success, while also receiving positive news on several competitive funding opportunities. In addition, our Community Wellness Initiative continues to advance through new partnerships, fundraising efforts for the National Fitness Court, expanded behavioral health collaborations, scholarship support, and initiatives designed to help meet students’ basic needs.
I look forward to welcoming everyone back during our Fall 2026 In-Service as we prepare for the semester ahead. Our Opening Session will provide an opportunity to celebrate recent accomplishments, introduce our strategic priorities, share important institutional updates, and discuss the opportunities that lie ahead for WTC. It is an exciting time for our College, and I appreciate the commitment each of you brings to serving our students and communities.
Looking ahead, the upcoming Texas legislative session will shape the future of higher education across our state. As new policies and funding priorities emerge, WTC will remain engaged, proactive, and focused on advancing initiatives that strengthen student success, workforce development, and the long-term vitality of the communities we serve. Together, we are well positioned to embrace these opportunities and continue building an even stronger Western Texas College.
Thank you for your continued dedication to our mission! I look forward to another outstanding year as we continue Serving Students Together.
