SNYDER—Western Texas College proudly announces the launch of a new CTE program for high school juniors and seniors: Introduction to Truck Driving and Logistics Level 1 Certificate. Beginning fall 2025, students across the region can enroll in this innovative, workforce-ready pathway to prepare for careers in one of West Texas’s fastest-growing industries.

“This program gives students a direct path into a high-paying, high-demand field,” said Shawn Fonville, Dean of Career & Technical Education at WTC. “It’s an exciting opportunity for young people who want to jumpstart their careers before they even leave high school.”

The program combines flexible online coursework with real-world knowledge in freight operations, business logistics, and commercial transportation. Students who complete the program will earn a Level 1 Certificate and be prepared to pursue a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) shortly after high school graduation.

The two-year certificate includes coursework, including Trucking Environment and Lifestyle, Introduction to Business Logistics, Freight Loss and Damage Claims, Special Topics in Truck & Bus Operations, and CDL Written Skills.

“The College will offer all classes online for this certificate,” added Fonville. “This gives school districts the flexibility to integrate the program into their existing schedules and infrastructure.”

The certificate prepares high school students for their next step: earning their CDL. At Western Texas College, they can choose a four-to six-week CDL program, or they can pursue the Truck Driving Owner/Operator certificate that includes CDL and business training. Both options ready students to take the CDL exam.

“We created the CDL training program because we saw the need in the West Texas workforce,” said Fonville. “And we started the Truck Driving Owner/Operator certificate program to make getting a CDL more financially accessible.”

Fonville noted that the College can help with federal and state financial aid for qualifying students if they choose the Truck Driving Owner/Operator certificate program. The four-to-six-week CDL program doesn’t qualify for the same traditional academic financial aid.

“WTC’s Introduction to Truck Driving and Logistics CTE program directly addresses a growing need in our region’s workforce,” said Fonville. “Students will leave with the credentials and confidence to step into well-paying jobs or continue building on their education.”
