Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding (4-2-6)

  1. Basic Course Information
    1. Course Description: Advanced topics based on accepted welding codes. Training provided with various electrodes in shielded metal arc welding processes with open V-groove joints in all positions.
    2. Any required prerequisites: WLDG 1528, WLDG 1557 or permission of instructor
    3. Required Grade for Enrolling in the Next Course in this Sequence: Satisfactory Completion
  2. Student Learning Outcomes
    1. Describe effects of preheating and post-weld heating
    2. Explain precautions used when welding various metals and alloys
    3. Distinguish between qualification and certification procedures
    4. Discuss problems of welding discontinuities
    5. Perform open groove welds with low carbon steel and low alloy electrodes in all positions
  3. Testing Requirements
    1. The final exam will take place in the welding classroom.
    2. Students are NOT allowed to use their book or but can use notes of any kind while taking their tests and exams.
    3. Students are allowed to use a calculator. 
  4. Major Course Requirements
    1. Attendance - 10%
    2. Participation – 20%
    3. Welding Fabrication Projects – 70%

All students will go through a variety of steps to learn advanced techniques to cut different types of metals, chose electrode and to weld in various positions.
