Intermediate Shielded Metal Arc Welding (5-3-6)

  1. Basic Course Information
    1. Course Description: A study of the production of various fillets and groove welds. Preparation of specimens for testing in various positions.
    2. Any required prerequisites: Freshman level courses or permission of instructor
    3. Required Grade for Enrolling in the Next Course in this Sequence: Satisfactory Completion
  2. Student Learning Outcomes
    1. Identify principles of arc welding
    2. Describe arc welding operations of fillet and groove joints
    3. Explain heat treatments of low alloy steels
    4. Explain weld size and profiles
    5. Prepare test plates
    6. Perform fillet welds in the overhead position
    7. Perform air carbon arc weld removal
    8. Perform bevel groove welds with backing plates in various positions
    9. Demonstrate use of tools and equipment.
  3. Testing Requirements
    1. The final exam will take place in the welding classroom.
    2. Students are NOT allowed to use their book or but can use notes of any kind while taking their tests and exams.
    3. Students are allowed to use a calculator. 
  4. Major Course Requirements
    1. Attendance - 10%
    2. Participation – 20%
    3. Welding Fabrication Projects – 70%

All students will go through a  variety of steps to learn about cutting different types of metals, what electrode to use as well as to arc weld in various positions
