  1. Basic Course Information
    1. Course Description-The practical identification, cause and control of common weeds, insects and plant diseases are studied.  Materials and equipment used for their prevention and control, both turfgrass and ornamental plants are practiced.  As part of the course final, students must sit for the Texas Non-commercial Pesticide Applicators Exam which is administered by the Texas Department of Agriculture at Western Texas College.  Cost for the exam is $25.
    2. Required prerequisites:-There are no prerequisites for the class. 
  2. Student Learning Outcomes
    1. Show Knowledge of Pest Control Terminology-Each student will become knowledgeable of general pest control terminology as published in the General Manual for Texas Pesticide Applicator Training published by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.
    2. Demonstrate knowledge of federal, state and local laws governing pesticide use.-Each student will become knowledgeable of federal, state and local laws governing pesticide use found in the Texas Pesticide Applicator Training Manual on Laws and Regulations.
    3. Recommend proper pest control methods and procedures-Each student will be given a pest management problem and ask to explain through a class demonstration / presentation different pest control strategies that might be used to control the pest problem and to also present methods and procedures for managing the pest problem.  Strategies to control pest problem should include monitoring pest population, cultural, biological and chemical control as a last resort.  Methods of pest control to choose from are spraying different pesticide formulations, applying granular pest control products, using baits, dusts and aerosols.

    1. Policy on Missed and Late Exams and Assignments
      Make-up testing will not be permitted for unexcused absences.  A score of 0 will be recorded for missing a test due to an unexcused absence.  Make-up testing times will be scheduled with the instructor for excused absences.  No absence will be excused unless instructor is notified prior to class.
    2. Attendance Policy-Regular attendance is expected for lecture and lab.  Lecture and lab attendance will be considered as a major exam.

    3. Policy on Academic Integrity-Cheating and plagiarism are dishonest.  Plagiarism (using, stating, offering or reporting as one’s own idea, expression or production of another person) carries the penalty of being dismissed from class with a grade of F.  A second violation may result in suspension from school.  This is also true of cheating on exams and any other activities identified in the student handbook under this heading.
