Turgrass Maintenance

  1. Basic Course Information
    1. Course Description- A practical study of turfgrass.  Emphasis will be on selection, propagation, daily maintenance, recognizing problems and how to correct / prevent problems.  Turfgrass mathematics will be stressed.  Proper turfgrass cultural practices will be studied.
  2. Required prerequisites.
    1. There are no prerequisites for the class.
  3. Student Learning Outcomes
    1. Discuss turfgrass quality, selection and adaptation of certain turfgrass species. This SLO was set-up for each student to demonstrate knowledge of choosing a turfgrass species for establishment by a class presentation.  I gave groups of two students per turfgrass species and they have to present favorable soils for establishment, ideal environment, fertility needs, use of turf, mowing and water requirements, pest problems of species and quality of turf.
    2. Identify and describe cultural practices of major cool season and warm season turfgrass. This SLO was set-up for each student to identify and describe cultural practices of major cool and warm season turfgrasses.  I give groups of two students per warm or cool season species and they have to present cultural practices for high quality maintenance of that particular turfgrass species.  Cultural practices  they have to discuss are:  managing soil PH, soil and water salinity, irrigation and drainage, fertilization, mowing, aerification, thatch control and pest management.

    1. Policy on Missed and Late Exams and Assignments-Make-up testing will not be permitted for unexcused absences.  A score of 0 will be recorded for missing a test due to an unexcused absence.  Make-up testing times will be scheduled with the instructor for excused absences.  No absence will be excused unless instructor is notified prior to class.
    2. Attendance Policy-Regular attendance is expected for lecture and for lab.  Lecture and lab attendance will be considered as a major exam.

    3. Policy on Academic Integrity - Cheating and plagiarism are dishonest.  Plagiarism (using, stating, offering or reporting as one’s own idea, expression or production of another person) carries the penalty of being dismissed from class with a grade of F.  A second violation may result in suspension from school.  This is also true of cheating on exams and any other activities identified in the student handbook under this heading.
