Outstanding Academic Students to Speak at WTC Commencement
SNYDER— Western Texas College is pleased to announce that Tylee Cooper and Jay Hitt, WTC’s Outstanding Academic Students for 2019, will speak at Commencement. Commencement is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at The Coliseum in Snyder.
"WTC is proud that the recipients of this year's Outstanding Academic Student Award are two student athletes,” said Dr. Barb Beebe, Western Texas College President. “To excel at their sport, as well as their studies, is quite an accomplishment and one worthy of distinction.”
"I am so thankful for the amazing people I’ve met in these two years who will forever have an incredible impact on my life,” said Cooper, an International Student from Vernon, British Columbia, Canada.
Cooper spent the last two years competing on the WTC Rodeo team under Coach Greg Rhodes and Assistant Coach Jaime Barrow. She not only stands out academically, but she also shines in her rodeo events, barrels and goat tying.
Jay Hitt also spent the last two years competing for WTC on the Men’s Golf Team under Coach Matt McCormick.
“I remember working hard in the classroom my first semester simply as a competition with my roommate for the highest grades and realizing that I actually wasn’t bad at the whole studying thing when I applied myself. I finished my freshman year with a 4.0 and academic confidence that I had never had before,” noted Hitt.
Both candidates for graduation feel that Western Texas College has changed their lives—for the better.
“I am leaving Western Texas College with a completely different perspective than when I got here,” says Hitt. “This school was the perfect fit for me as I am the first generation in my immediate family to graduate from college.”
“I will miss my time here greatly, but I am forever grateful for the lessons I’ve learnt and the person I’ve become during my time at WTC," added Cooper.
