Definition of Mathematics

Mathematics is a broad-ranging, ever-expanding, vibrant body of knowledge providing tools for a quantitative description of the world around us. Mathematics is used to create and evaluate models of all types of phenomena, provide optimal solutions to questions, and generate algorithms to solve complex problems in such diverse areas as the natural sciences, social and behavioral sciences, computing, and engineering.

Student online course evaluations are very important to Western Texas College.  In the past, our only proctored test was the comprehensive final exam.  For that reason, students were required to make a 60 or higher on the comprehensive final exam for successful completion to be considered.  However, past student evaluations expressed dissatisfaction with this policy.  We have listened to our students’ voices and will be changing this policy to better meet the needs of our online students and to better align online courses with campus classes. Therefore, starting Fall 2014, this policy will no longer be in effect.  To ensure the academic integrity of our online courses, the following new policies will apply.

New Policies for Online Mathematics Courses – Starting Fall 2014

  • All chapter tests and the comprehensive final exam must be proctored by an approved testing organization.
  • Students are not allowed to use books or notes of any kind when taking their proctored tests and exam.
  • Students are allowed to use a calculator (TI-84 or its equivalent is strongly recommended).   TI-89, TI-Inspire with CAS, or any other calculator with CAS capability are NOT permitted.

See the Catalog for Course Descriptions.
