A Plan for the Fall 2020 Semester


The health and safety of our faculty, staff, and students is of utmost importance to Western Texas College. The duration of the COVID-19 pandemic remains unknown as the situation continues to evolve. The decision to welcome students, faculty, and staff back to campus was made after careful consideration of various factors, including local public health guidance, institutional capacity, and adherence to public health practices aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19. 

WTC: Welcome To Campus, A Plan for the Fall 2020 Semester focuses on the health and well-being of our campus community. We ask that our WTC family fully participate in these efforts and respect all CDC and WTC guidelines. This is an unprecedented time and one in which keeping an open mind while remaining patient and understanding will best serve our campus community. 

The decision to move face-to-face classes to an online format may occur at any time depending on a variety of factors including Executive Orders; local, state and federal guidelines; and recommendations from local and state health departments.

If you have tested positive for COVID-19, or you have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, please do not come on campus. If you are ill, please do not come on campus. Masks are required to enter the campus, all WTC buildings, offices, and classrooms. 

  • Face coverings are to be worn by students, faculty, staff, and visitors while on campus
  • Students may remove face coverings when seated and eating in the dining hall
  • Various career and technical education classes may require face coverings to be removed for certain activities, i.e. welding, lineman
  • Face coverings are to be worn by everyone
    • In hallways
    • While interacting with others in offices
    • On elevators
    • In common areas
  • Employees may remove face coverings when at their desks if in an office setting that allows for social distancing of 6 ft. or more
  • Face coverings are not required of faculty while lecturing in the classroom or lab
  • Face coverings are not required of switchboard receptionists seated behind a barrier shield
  • Students with documented health issues that are negatively impacted by wearing face coverings must contact the Vice President and Dean of Student Services
  • Employees with documented health issues that are negatively impacted by wearing face coverings must contact Human Resources
  • Employees and students are expected to provide their own additional face coverings.

In addition, visitors to offices on campus may be asked to sign-in before being assisted, even if an appointment has been previously scheduled. Signing in at an office allows the office to control social distancing and aids in contact tracing should the need arise. 


WTC’s fall 2020 academic calendar has recently been revised. The fall semester will now end before Thanksgiving. 

Important dates to note:

  • Residence Halls open on Monday, August 3, 2020
  • Classes begin on Wednesday, August 12, 2020
  • Finals start Tuesday, November 17 and end Monday, November 23, 2020
  • Residence Halls close for the fall semester on November 23, 2020.

All people coming onto the WTC campus must use the College Avenue entrance. All other entrances and exits are temporarily closed. 

All commuter students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the campus will be screened for fever upon arrival. Anyone with a temperature of 100.3 degrees or less will be allowed on campus and will be given a wristband to wear while on WTC grounds. The wristband serves as a visible sign that an individual has been screened and is fever free. 

Anyone whose temperature is 100.4 degrees or above will not be admitted to campus or to any campus facilities. 

Students who reside in campus housing will be screened daily. Glover students will be screened in the Commons on the ground floor; Clinton students will be screened in the laundry room on the ground floor. Student-athletes will also be screened before their specific team practice. Student-athletes should check with their coach for further information regarding these screenings. 

Any person on campus without a wristband will immediately be sent to a screening area to be screened. 


Western Texas College will offer both face-to-face and online classes this fall. 

Please note that all face-to-face classes may go online at any time. 

Face-to-face classes will have a capacity limitation depending on the number of students registered for a specific course and the size of the classroom where that course will be held. 

Should class size prohibit social distancing with all students present, the class will become a hybrid class. The instructor will divide the class into two groups with each student being assigned one day for face-to-face instruction, and one day for online instruction. The instructor will inform students if their class will be hybrid and which day they should report to class. 

Students and faculty must wear face coverings to class. Before class begins, each student will be responsible for disinfecting their seating area by wiping down their desk and chairs with cleaning supplies provided in each classroom. 

In classes where social distancing is possible, once students are seated and the class begins, it is up to the individual instructor if students may remove their masks. 

Please note that students who refuse to wear a mask may be asked to leave the classroom by their instructor. The student must then immediately make arrangements to report to the Vice-President and Dean of Student Services. 


Due to the difficulty in social distancing on an elevator, masks must be worn and only two people are allowed at a time. 


The cafeteria will offer regular meal service, but with slight alterations to accommodate social distancing. 

Persons in line for meals must maintain at least a six-foot social distance from the person in front of them and the person behind them. 

Student-athletes on the same team should sit together in assigned areas. The cafeteria will also provide open seating with six-foot spacing in between seats for commuter students and employees. 

Anyone entering the cafeteria must wear a mask at all times unless they are sitting down and eating. 

PROTOCOLS (Subject to change) 

Students, faculty, and staff should self-screen for symptoms of COVID-19 prior to coming onto campus each day. COVID-19 symptoms include: 

  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Repeated shaking with chills
  • Feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.4 degrees
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Headache

 (Note: Symptoms of COVID-19 may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus.)

Any student, faculty, staff, or campus visitor with new or worsening symptoms should not come to campus until:

  • At least 2 days (48 hours) have passed since recovery (resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications)
  • The individual has improvement in respiratory symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath); and
  • At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared.

In the case of a student, faculty, staff, or campus visitor who has symptoms that could be COVID-19 and who has not been tested nor evaluated by a medical professional for COVID- 19, the individual should be assumed to have COVID-19, and the individual may not return to the campus until the individual has completed the same three-step criteria listed above.

If the student, faculty, staff, or campus visitor has symptoms that could be COVID-19 and wants to return to campus before completing the above self-isolation period, the individual must either:

a) obtain a medical professional’s note clearing the individual for return based on an alternative diagnosis or
b) receive two separate confirmations at least 24 hours apart that they are free of COVID-19 infection.

A student, faculty, staff, or campus visitor with known close contact to a person who is lab-confirmed to have COVID-19 should not return to the campus until the end of the 10-day self-quarantine period from the last date of exposure.

Those who discover that they have been exposed to people with known or suspected COVID-19 should:

  • Contact their direct supervisor by telephone, email or text if an employee
  • Contact their instructor(s) and the Vice-President and Dean of Student Services by email if a student
  • Stay in quarantine until 10 days after last exposure and maintain social distance (at least 6 feet) from others at all times
  • Self-monitor for symptoms
  • Check temperature twice a day
  • Watch for fever, cough, shortness of breath or other symptoms of COVID-19
  • Avoid contact with people at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19
  • Follow CDC guidance if symptoms develop
