2011-2012 Team
Coming off a 4th place team finish at the NJCAA Outdoor Championships in Kansas last year, the women look to maintain that excellence this year. Beginning their second season for women’s track and field at Western Texas College, Coach Mik looks for a great season.
“Once again we have very limited numbers; I like to keep the team small on the women’s side. We have 3 of the 5 women returning from last year’s 4th place team. I am excited for this group”. Those returners are Abigail Gonzales, who placed in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs, Samalia Cousins, who placed in the 400m finals, and Sharlene Nickle placed in the 1500 meter run, 10,000 meter run, and joined Samalia on the 4x400 meter relay.
With key returners and the incoming freshman class, Coach Mik is already set on building off of last year’s performance. “Losing Ann-Marie Duffus (Heptathlon Champion) and Leslie-Ann Mitchell (Hurdles/Sprints) would seem to hurt the women’s program in many people’s eyes, not ours, they will be missed but we have recruited this class to get us points in other ways this year.”
The Western Texas College Track and Field team opens the season in March, when they travel to Stephenville, Texas to compete in the Tarleton State Relays.
