2009-10 Team
Third year WTC golf Coach Cody Cox believes this year’s WTC squad could be the one to capture the Westerners first national championship.
The Lady Westerners are coming off a strong finish last year in which they qualified for the NJCAA National Championship in Daytona Beach Florida. The WTC golf team’s trip to the nationals was the third consecutive time they have qualified. The team would eventually finish in sixth place at the national meet.
The Lady Westerners return all five women off last year’s national championship qualifier, including Katie Mundy (Southampton, UK), Lauren Smith (Northumberland, UK), Allison Sharrock (Snyder, TX), Haley Hise (Kermit, TX), and Danica Weddle (Midland, TX). The Westerners singed four excellent young players to add substantial depth to this year’s squad. Coach Cox, a noted recruiter looks to four new members of the golf team to offer the competition that is needed for a championship team. Hollie Weatherburn (Chessire, UK) comes to WTC as one of the United Kingdom’s top ranked amateur golfers. In addition to Weatherburn, Kandise Ybanz (Lubbock, TX), Samantha Soto (Seminole, TX), and Kelsey Sosebee (Borger, TX) should all contribute to a team coming off the 2008-2009 year that was ranked as high as second in the national polls.
Cox summarized the outlook for this year’s team, saying, “There are nine ladies that could play in the top five for us and we wouldn’t miss a beat. That depth helps the women push each other when it is qualifying time. They know that they have to play their best, and get better, just to qualify for us.”
This year’s schedule will include several NCAA Division I and Division II tournaments. The WTC women’s golf team will be playing against some of the top programs at every level. This could help the Lady Westerners assess themselves early and see what they will need to do to capture the national championship.
The battle for the WJCAC and Region title appear to be a showdown between Western Texas College and McClendon College during the 2009-2010 campaign.
The Lady Westerners travel to Denton, Texas, to compete in the University of North Texas tournament on September 13th-15th. WTC, McClendon, and Redlands are the only NJCAA squads in a field of NCAA Division I and Division II teams at the University of North Texas tournament.
