2010-11 Team
The Lady Westerners are coming off a strong finish last year in which they qualified for the NJCAA National Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida. The WTC golf team’s trip to the nationals was the fourth consecutive time they have qualified. The team would eventually finish in fourth place at the national meet, earning their highest finish in the program’s history.
The Lady Westerners return three golfers from last year’s squad that should be factors in the team’s success in 2010-2011. Hollie Weatherburn (Cambria, UK) Samantha Soto (Seminole, TX), and Kandice Ybanez (Lubbock, TX) all return to the links for the WTC women’s golf team. Ybanbez came on strong near the end of the year, according to Cox.
The program will have some major holes to fill with the departure of All-American Katie Mundy. Also departed are Lauren Smith, Haley Hise, Danica Weddle, and Snyder native, Allison Sharrock.
Coach Cox, a noted recruiter, looks for new signees Romee VanBommell (Netherlands), Judy Papenfus (South Africa), and Jessica Pickwick (Australia) to step in and help fill the void. “We also lost a couple of strong recruits late this summer to four year schools,” assessed Coach Cox. “One of them passed the NCAA clearinghouse, and immediately signed.”
The WTC women’s golf team will have a tough act to follow after finishing second regional play to McLennan College. “McLennan College will be the favorite to repeat in the region playoffs,” noted Cox.
The Lady Westerners open the season with competition on September 27th-28th when they travel to Oklahoma City to compete in the WTAMU Invitational in Amarillo.
