Introduction to Mass Communication

  1. Basic Course Information:
    1. Course Description: The study of theories and models of mass communication, the relationship of mass media and society, and trends in various forms of media.
    2. Any required prerequisites: including permission of division chair for enrollment: FULFILL THE  REQUIREMENTS TO BE AN ADMITTED STUDENT TO WESTERN TEXAS COLLEGE 
  2. Student Learning Outcomes:  Define the role of the media industries in mass communication; describe regulations and ethical decisions for each medium; explain inter-relationships and converging technologies in media industries.
  3. Assessment will be accomplished through written assignments and exams. Class discussion will also be a part of student’s mastery of subject content.
  4. Major Course Requirements
    1. Major Requirement 1: Student will be required to write out chapter questions in assigned format. Failure to follow the provided format will result in the paper being returned to the student.
    2. Major Requirement 2:  Students will be required to participate in class discussions.
  5.  Information on Books and Other Course Materials
    1.  Required Book: The Media of Mass Communication, Vivian; 11th Edition  ISBN-13: 978- 0- 205- 02958- 7 / Textbook is required.
    2. Other:  There will be course handouts throughout the semester.

    1. Academic Integrity:  Refer to the WTC Catalog, available both in hard copy and online; assigned papers are put through an integrity-comparison test to detect plagiarism.

    8. Attendance: Each absence will be unexcused and recorded as such, unless cleared AHEAD of time with the Instructor. The Bad Weather Policy is included in this section of the catalog.
    9. Missed and late exams and assignments may be made up at the discretion of the instructor but if allowed, will be subject to grade penalty.
    10. All assignments, exams, etc.  Will be given a point value. Grades therefore, will be the percentage of the points earned, vs. the total points possible.
