  1. Basic Course Information
    1. Course Description:Exploration of ideas using painting media and techniques.
    2. Any required prerequisites:Freshman studio core or permission of department head.
  2. Student Learning Outcomes
    1. The student will generate two-dimensional paintings through the analysis of their perception of three-dimensional objects or fields using a viewfinder, grid, and projector.
    2. The student will compile fundamental painting techniques, project research, and course notes in a sketchbook.
    3. The student will develop strategies for problem-solving, critical thinking, and objective formal criticism of their work and the work of their peers in a variety of critique formats.
    4. The student will create a professional, digital portfolio of their work.
  3.  Major Course Requirements
    1. Major Requirement 1:Complete all assignments staying within specific parameters and submit within the deadlines.  Includes “Idea Book.” (85% of final grade).
    2. Major Requirement 2:Participate in class discussions and critiques, and submit a portfolio (15% of final grade).

  5. Policies & Procedures
    1. Attendance Policy:All students are expected and required to attend all lecture & lab sessions regularly and on time.
      1. Three unexcused absences and two tardies over the course of the semester will be permissible. Note:3 tardies = 1 unexcused absence.
      2. Excess absences will result in the reduction of the final grade by 10 points per unexcused absence beginning with the fourth absence. Anyone who misses more than six consecutive class days will be dropped from the course, regardless of the excuse.
    2. How to Submit Work: Every painting submitted in this course must have your name and the title of the assignment on it or it will not be graded. There will be a marked drawer for you to submit your assignments. If the work does not fit, please ask me where to put your work or portfolio for submission.
      1. Improving your Grade: You can earn an A on any finished painting submitted on time. No previously incomplete work may be resubmitted. You may repeat this process until the end of the semester. No points will be taken off should the work be resubmitted.
    3. Cell Phone & Electronic Device Policy: Use of electronics is not allowed. Students who even allow their devices to make an appearance will be asked to leave the classroom and will receive an unexcused absence. This includes the following -
      1. Cell phones
      2. iPods, iPhones, or any other MP3 device
      3. laptops
      4. PDAs
    4. Studio Use Policy: Students are responsible for cleaning up after themselves in the studio lab every time they use the lab. If you do not clean up after yourself, you will earn the privilege of cleaning the entire classroom one Friday, or receive an unexcused absence.
  6. Classroom Safety: Students enrolled in this course will be informed of potential health hazards or bodily injury connected with the use of any materials and/or processes, and they will be instructed how to proceed safely. Some basic rules:
    1. No eating in the lab.
    2. Drinks must have a lid or a cap – no open coffee mugs or cans of pop.
    3. STUDENTS MUST CLEAN UP AFTER THEMSELVES!
    4. Students must wear shoes in the lab
    5. No children or pets allowed in the lab.
  7. Ethics & Art Making:In this class you may be asked to do “art research.”Just as in your other courses, you are required to cite your source for information - even images.
    1. Academic Integrity: Conduct of students which may cast unfavorable reflection upon the college will result in the student receiving disciplinary action for misconduct. The following are examples of possible student misconduct in this class:
      1. Submitting work that is identical or similar to work you submitted for credit in another class
      2. Allowing another student to do your work for you
      3. Submitting work as your own that was created with the assistance of others.
      4. Completing a quiz with the assistance of another person.
