
Rome McNary - Head Coach

Rome McNary is returning to Western Texas College after coaching for two years at Victoria Memorial High School and one year at Victoria West High School. McNary spent six years at Western Texas College before leaving for Victoria, Texas. At Victoria Memorial High School, McNary compiled a 31-31 record, while at Victoria West McNary compiled a 22-15 record and helped lead the team to the Area round of the playoffs in 2011. At Memorial and West McNary coached 23 All-District Players and 1 All-State Player. In his previous coaching stint at Western Texas College McNary compiled a 128-104 overall record and an 84-60 conference record during his four years as the head coach of the Lady Westerners Softball Program. He guided the team to four straight Region V West Regional Tournament appearances and one National Tournament Appearance (2007) placing seventh. The 2007 Lady Westerners were also the 2007 NFCA Academic National Champions for the sport of Softball finishing with a 3.58 Team Grade Point Average for the year. Western Texas College had a total of 13 All Conference players, 11 All Region Players, 1 All American as well as 9 Academic All Americans during his first tenure.
McNary began his softball coaching career in 1999 at Texas Wesleyan University as a graduate assistant while completing his college education. He coached fast pitch softball at Texas Wesleyan from 1999-2001 before taking a brief break from coaching in 2002. He then returned to coaching in the spring of 2003, when he arrived on the Western Texas College campus as Rodney McNeill’s assistant. McNary spent the 2003 and 2004 season’s as McNeill’s assistant before taking the reins when McNeill left for Ennis High School.
McNary is originally from Cuero, Texas located about an hour and a half from Corpus Christi and San Antonio. McNary graduated from Cuero High School in 1994. He played high school football, basketball and baseball and was a 1st team all-state Tight End, Punter and Placekicker as well as Honorable Mention All-State Defensive Tackle. In baseball Rome was a 3rd team all-state pitcher. After High School, Rome attended Ranger College in Ranger, Texas on a football and baseball scholarship. He then attended Texas Wesleyan University on a baseball scholarship where he finished his baseball playing career and earned his degree in 1999. While at Texas Wesleyan he was named To the Dean’s List, Heart of Texas Conference Player of the Week, Recipient of the Carroll Beringer Scholarship and received Texas Wesleyan Universities Gene and Ann Burge Sportsmanship Award.
In his spare time he loves to play slow pitch softball and basketball. When he has more than a couple days of time, he loves to go back home to Cuero, Texas the town he credits for helping him become successful as an athlete as well as in coaching to visit his family and friends. He loves to listen to all genres of music.
McNary says, “Recruiting, meeting and talking to new athletes, talking and learning from fellow coaches and seeing his athletes achieve success are what he loves most about coaching, “We as coaches have the opportunity to influence so many people’s lives. I love the idea of that. When I see one of my kids achieve success it is the best feeling I could have as a coach. I try to make it fun and rewarding for the kids in my program. When you are having fun you are more relaxed, focused and those pressure or intense moments in a contest become just another play in the game.

Claudia Berumen - Assistant Coach

Claudia Berumen is entering her first season as an assistant softball coach at Western Texas College. At Western Texas, Claudia will be working with the outfield.
Originally from Santa Paula, Calif., Berumen graduated from Santa Paula High in 2001. She played at Ventura College were she was the starting centerfielder and team captain for the Lady Pirates. While at Ventura, she made the Dean’s List her freshmen year and was a first-team-all conference performer her freshmen and sophomore year.
After two years at the junior college level, Berumen transferred to Northwestern Oklahoma State University, where she was a second-team-all conference performer during her senior year. At Northwestern, Berumen was a .288 career hitter with 26 stolen bases. She played in 112 games, scored 54 runs and drove in 20.
She graduated in May of 2007 and received her bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in psychology.
