The Western Texas College Lady Westerner basketball team has achieved a No. 10 ranking for junior colleges in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Honor roll.
WTC was the only team from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference and the second in the top 10 from Texas. Panola County Junior College achieved a No.5.
The Lady Westerners compiled a team grade point average of 3.109.
GPAs were calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by each student-athlete by the total number of hours earned by the team. The GPAs were rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point.
"Coach (Tammy) Davis continues to graduate athletes and recruit young women who excel in the classroom," WTC President Dr. Mike Drieth said. "WTC recognizes and greatly appreciates the positive publicity we receive because of the overall success of our women's basketball program. Last year's team was highly competitive on the court while also compiling an impressive academic record."
The Lady Westerners improved from the previous season, even though they finished last in the WJCAC standings for the second straight year. WTC was 13-17 for the season, 2-10 in conference play. In 2008-09, the Lady Westerners were 5-25 and winless in the conference.
