Westerners 1-3 at Weatherford

The Western Texas College baseball team dropped a pair of games Saturday at Weatherford College after taking the first contest of the three-game set on Friday.

The Westerners (4-3) prevailed, 7-5, on Friday after Dan Jackson broke a 5-5 tie, driving in the game winning runs in the top of the eighth. Lefthander Hector Arellano earned the win and Jason Fisch went 3 for 5 in the tilt.

WTC fell, 2-1, in the opener Saturday as Jay Johnson drove in the lone run, scoring Dustin Jackson to tie the game in the fifth. Weatherford claimed the win in the bottom of the seventh, with Doug Shields taking the loss for WTC – the second time the sophomore righty has been on the losing end of a 2-1 decision.

WTC dropped the final game, 7-1. Drew Middleton was pegged for the loss as Weatherford exploded for four runs in the bottom of the eighth to put a two-run game out of reach.

“We just hit into too many double plays this weekend,” said head coach Craig Moore, noting that t he team hit into eight during Saturday’s twin bill. “We made contact but we couldn’t find the holes. We played well enough to win, but we didn’t have any timely hitting.”

The Westerners will take on Cisco Junior College in a doubleheader Wednesday at Westerner Field. First game will start at noon and both contests will be seven innings.
