2009-10 Team
Third year WTC golf coach Cody Cox believes this year’s WTC squad could be the one to capture the Westerner’s first WJCAC conference championship since men’s golf was reinstated back in 2006 and give the program a
legitimate chance at a national championship.
Three of the five players, James Price (Great Yarmouth, UK), Mathew Webb (Northumberland, UK) and Elliot Groves (Southampton, UK) that competed for the Westerners last year in the regional tournament are back this year. Cox, a highly touted recruiter, has added some new additions to the team which provide him with a valuable situation for any coach…depth. The Westerners should have the greatest depth on any team since golf was reinstated. Coach Cox went on record as saying, “We are extremely balanced and strong from the top to the bottom of the roster.” Cox sees newcomers Nick Flynn (Surrey, UK), Jeff O’Dell (Alamogordo, NM), Jonas Hedlund (Stockholm, Sweden) and Steve Cronin (Surrey, UK) as the front runner to compete with the returners for the top five spots on the men’s team.
This year’s schedule could prove to be the toughest schedule that the Westerners have ever played. The men’s golf team will be playing against the best of the best week in and week out. Every tournament in which the Westerners compete, feature multiple teams ranked in the national top ten. Part of Coach Cox’s scheduling philosophy includes competing against the top teams in the nation on a regular basis. Cox feels that the team has the capabilities to not only compete, but to win against those top teams.
The WJCAC men’s golf race could be a real shootout. Along with WTC, New Mexico Junior College (defending WJCAC champ and national co-champion), Midland College, and Odessa College should compete for the top spots in the conference.
The Westerners travel to Lubbock, Texas for their opener, as they compete in the Lubbock Christian Shootout on September 13th -15th.
