WTC Westerner Golf Team

2010-11 Team

Entering his fourth year as the WTC golf coach, Cody Cox believes this year’s WTC men’s golf squad could be the one to capture the Westerner’s first WJCAC conference championship since men’s golf was reinstated back in 2006 and give the program a legitimate chance at a national championship. “On paper, this is the best team we have ever come in with,” noted Cox. “This should be a pretty tough group to beat.”

The Westerners, ranked as high as 4th in the NJCAA national polls last year, return only one golfer….Nick Flynn. “We look for Nick Flynn to be a significant contributor to this year’s team,” assessed Cox. “He has been playing well this summer. He qualified for the second stage of the U.S. amateur tournament.”

Cox credits a strong recruiting class with the optimistic outlook for the Westerners. The WTC coach identified the strength of this year’s squad saying, “The biggest difference in 2010-2011 is the depth; from the top to the bottom of the roster, we have 10 golfers who can really play.” New recruit Kyle Lucas (South Africa) has the highest ranking of any golfer during Cox’s tenure as golf coach. Also look for strong performances from James Kerr (England), Jonathan Bryan (England).

The Westerners' schedule will again feature some of the top collegiate golfers on a national level. The team will compete in numerous NAIA and NCAA (D-II) tournaments. Every tournament in which the Westerners compete feature multiple teams ranked in the national top ten. Part of Coach Cox’s scheduling philosophy includes competing against the top teams in the nation on a regular basis. Cox feels that the team has the capabilities to not only compete, but to win against those top teams.

The WJCAC men’s golf race could be a real shootout. Along with WTC, New Mexico Junior College Midland College, and Odessa College should compete for the top spots in the conference. On the regional level, look for a strong McLennan team (back to back national championships) to be the forerunner.

The Westerners open the season with competition on September 27th-28th when they travel to Oklahoma City to compete in the UC Ferguson tournament hosted by Oklahoma City University.
