Larren M. Silver, 34, currently the associate head coach at McLennan Community College in Waco, has been named the new head coach of the Western Texas College Westerners, pending board approval in May. Silver becomes the 11th head basketball coach in the programs storied history.

McLennan has been 122-36 during Silver's tenure there...and this year was one win away from going to the national tournament, losing to the eventual runner-up, Midland. He previously was an assistant at Midland College, coached a professional team in Mexico and has high school coaching experience. Silver was the fifth leading scorer in the state of Texas at Reicher Catholic High School in 1995. He is the all-time career leader in free-throw percentage at both NMJC and University of Mary-Hardin Baylor.

He earned a master’s degree in Spanish from UTPB and a bachelor’s degree from University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. He is fluent in the Spanish language.

“I am excited about the potential for a winning, first-class program at Western Texas College,” said Silver. “My life is centered on basketball, balanced with my commitment to God and family. I have been on gym floors all my life, from a child to player to coach. I have gained from years of contacts with high school and college coaches and, importantly, from years of mentoring during my Dad’s 30 years of Texas coaching experience.”

Silver comes from a coaching family.  His father, Duane, was the longtime head coach of LaVega High School in Waco.  Overall, Duane Silver’s teams won 493 games in 29 years of coaching including eight district championships.

The pick of Silver was one of the first big decisions for new WTC athletic director Tammy Davis who said she was impressed from the start of the process with him.

“Coach Silver brings to the position the ability to recruit high talent, high character players,” Davis said.  “He places value in a student-athlete’s education, their personal development in addition to their basketball career.  I have no doubt that he will have a very successful program which the community as well as WTC can get behind and be proud of.”

Davis said Silver as well as his players will represent WTC in a positive respectful way.

“He understands the importance recruiting within such a strong conference.  He knows what it takes to be successful within the region and the level of talent he will need to recruit to sustain a competitive program.  Coach Silver will be a strong addition to the coaching staff, the faculty and the community,” Davis said.

Silver is married with two sons. The family will be moving to Snyder this summer.
