Seeking volunteer interns who are interested in gaining experience with virtual reference.

Deadline:  Friday, September 26th

This is a pilot service using instant messaging to serve students at Western Texas College in Snyder, TX, Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, TX, Odessa College in Odessa, TX, Vernon College in Vernon, TX, and Texas State Technical College West Texas in Sweetwater, TX and various other locations.  These are community colleges and a small university which serve both on-campus and distance education students. The service may also serve other college and/or university students in the future. The service is currently based out of Western Texas College’s library, whose website can be found here: http://www.wtc.edu/lrc/index.html

 

Requirements:        

  • Interns must be currently enrolled students at the School of Library and Information Studies at Texas Woman’s University, the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin or the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of North Texas

OR

  • Be an alumnus who is a current Texas resident with access to TexShare databases
  • Interns must commit to volunteering at least two hours per week
  • Volunteer interns should be able to commit to volunteering from September 29th  -  December 11th , 2008. Successful interns can continue volunteering in later semesters.
  • Must have reliable access to a computer and the internet during that time.

You should consider this opportunity if:

  • You have taken or are currently taking an introductory reference course
  • Have a strong interest in virtual reference
  • Have good communication skills
  • Are comfortable with instant messaging software
  • Are willing to learn and work with a pilot service
  • Are willing to work from a distance

Additional Opportunity: Some interns could have the opportunity to be “class librarians” for online classes, assisting online students with research through such asynchronous means as discussion boards, email, etc. Please note your interest in this opportunity on the application.
