2009-2010 Team

The Westerners will again look to make progress for the upcoming 2010 season under fourth year head coach Craig Moore.

"We are coming off a school record for wins last season, and the goal for this year is to improve on that and be in position to compete for a regional berth."

The 2010 squad will be led by a strong group of pitchers.  Sophomore Doug Shields (Mequite, TX) is again expected to lead the group after posting a 5-2 record last year against conference opponents.  Also helping on the mound will be returning starters Kyle Forsyth (Edmond, OK) and Drew Middleton (Denver City, TX).

"When you have three of your four weekend guys back, you feel pretty confident that they will get the job done,"  Moore said.

In the mix for mound time will be redshirt freshman Steven Burnham (Australia) and sophomore Bristan Clingaman (Brazosport, TX), as well as freshman Jerad McCrummen (Mesquite, TX) and Steven Diaz (Amarillo).  "With the way our schedule is set-up in conference play, you better have depth on the bump.  This staff could be the deepest that we have had here."

Offensively, the Westerners will rely on a strong group of newcomers to get the job done.

"We have brought in some freshmen that will do some great things for us.  The key for them will be how quickly they can adjust to the game at the college level."

Sophomore Joe Lassiter (Edmond, OK) will give some stability in the infield, as he is the most seasoned player.  "We expect leadership from Joe towards the younger guys.  He has been around for a year and understands what it takes to be successful at this level.

"If this group of young men wants to achieve its goals this year, they're going to have to buy into what the coaching staff preaches daily.  We must be very sound defensively, and very good on the mound.  You can win a lot of games by simply pitching and catching the baseball effectively, which I expect us to do."
